Man City Tie Gvardiol Down With New Five-Year Deal

Manchester City, a Premier League team, announced on Tuesday that Josko Gvardiol has agreed to a new five-year contract.

The Croatian international’s previous contract, which had two years remaining, has been extended until 2031 with a 12-month extension option.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have been linked to the central defender, who has made 122 appearances since joining from RB Leipzig for £77 million ($102 million) in 2023.

“As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted,” said the 24-year-old.

He added that City’s fans have been unbelievable with him from day one, describing the club as providing absolutely everything for its players and calling it the best club in the world to play for.

Gvardiol, a Premier League winner in 2024 who has featured at both centre-back and left-back, returned to action in May after more than four months out with a broken leg.

He was part of Croatia’s World Cup campaign and is now looking to establish himself under new manager Enzo Maresca.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, said Gvardiol is a player the club strongly believes in, describing him as young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world.

Gvardiol’s new deal follows recent long-term contract extensions for Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov.
