Man Displays Haul Of Sweets And Biscuits Recovered From Accra Floodwaters In Viral Video

A man has shared footage of a large collection of confectionery items he claims to have recovered from Accra’s floodwaters after products from a warehouse were swept away during the recent heavy flooding, in a video captioned “After free shopping” that has since gone viral.

The footage shows a table piled high with sweets, biscuits, chocolates, and multiple jars of candies, an assortment consistent with goods that would typically be stocked in a warehouse or wholesale confectionery facility.

The clip is the latest in a series of videos documenting residents collecting goods swept from warehouses and storage facilities during Accra’s recent flooding disaster, which caused widespread damage across the capital including at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Achimota Mile 7, and the Spintex corridor.

While the circumstances under which floodwater displaces goods may appear to create an opportunity for collection, authorities have noted that goods belonging to an identifiable owner retain their ownership status regardless of how they came to be displaced, and collecting them without authorisation may constitute theft under Ghanaian law.

The owner of the warehouse from which the goods originated has not been publicly identified.
