Moment 10k protesters form human chain to ‘save’ Majorca beach from tourists

This is the moment 10,000 furious locals formed a massive human chain along a Majorca beach in a desperate stand against mass tourism. Protesters stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the pristine shores of Es Trenc, a protected nature reserve in the south of the island, holding placards reading “Hands off” and warning “A Magaluf in the south of the island – that’s what they want”.

Magaluf is notoriously dubbed the party capital of Europe, where during the chaotic peak summer months, over two million sun-seekers and rowdy clubbers completely overwhelm the area. Desperate locals are terrified that the south coast will be swallowed by the same unmanageable crowds, cheap-booze culture and a lengthy strip of concrete hotels. The dramatic rally on Sunday (July 5) was sparked by controversial new plans from the Balearic Government. Environmentalists have claimed the proposed legislation will pave the way for uncontrolled development in the island’s most beautiful natural areas.

The massive protest was organised by three activist groups: GOB Mallorca, Terraferida and Menys Turisme, Més Vida (Less Tourism, More Life). They warn that the new laws will put vulnerable reserves like Es Trenc at major risk by allowing new developments to bypass parliament and require only government approval.

Dani Comas, a spokesperson for Menys Turisme Mes Vida, hailed the turnout as an unprecedented success: “We had 10,000 people come out yesterday. It was a historic demonstration. Never before had such a long human chain been formed so far from Palma.”

Organisers confirmed the colossal human chain stretched for more than 1.8 miles (3km), spanning from the Club Nautic de sa Rapita all the way to Ses Covetes.

Activists are sounding the alarm that the loophole could lead to a wave of new beach bars, car parks and tourist facilities cutting through the nature reserve. However, the Balearic Government has hit back, insisting that Es Trenc’s protected status will not be weakened.

The beach protest is part of the wider “Mallorca al Limit” (Mallorca at its Limit) campaign, which demands strict caps on tourism growth and urgent protection for the island’s environment.

The tension has already boiled over into direct action. Last month, five international estate agencies were targeted in a coordinated overnight vandalism attack in the inland town of Santa Maria del Cami, where windows were smashed, locks sabotaged and walls coated with graffiti.

The fierce anti-tourism movement is being fuelled by growing fury over the transformation of Majorca into a “theme park” for foreigners. Local activists blame soaring rents and skyrocketing property prices on the island’s popularity as a holiday destination, leaving young locals completely unable to find affordable housing or live independently.
