‘Pure sycophancy’ – Lawyer condemns renaming public facilities after Tinubu

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has described as ‘unbridled sycophancy’ the renaming of public projects after President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during on Arise Television on Monday, Effiong said such an act does not reflect public interest.
He was reacting to the renaming of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road after President Tinubu, noting that public infrastructure should bear names that reflect public interest
“So, when public funds are used for public projects, it is only commonsensical that the names should have some bearing to the public. That is why this road was named Lagos Calabar Coastal Road. In other words, this is supposed to be coastal road connecting Lagos and Calabar.
“But if you are now saying that it is no longer a road connecting Lagos and Calabar, it is now a road connecting Lagos and Tunubu, and you want to rename it as Bola Tinubu Coastal Road, some logic has to be offered for it. But this is not isolated. We are seeing a pattern, and that is where some of us are concerned. That this is becoming purely egoistic that several public institutions and projects are being renamed after the president.
“You have the library at the National Assembly being renamed after the president. You have immigration renaming one of the infrastructures after the president.
“If you are a president that believes that you have really served the Nigerian public, you should allow history to judge you,” the lawyer said.
