Reps Member Reveals Colleague Could Not Afford ₦700,000 Daughter's School Fees

Chinedu Obika, a member of the House of Representatives, disclosed that despite being in the National Assembly, one of his colleagues was unable to cover his daughter’s ₦700,000 school fees.

Obika claimed that after the congressman was unable to gather the funds approximately two months ago, he helped the colleague by covering the school expenses.

The congressman for the Federal Capital Territory’s AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency stated in an interview with KAA Truths that was published on Thursday that the occurrence defied the popular notion that all National Assembly members profit financially from their posts.

He claimed that the experience demonstrated that many MPs do not benefit financially to the same extent as the general populace.

Let me now tell you something that you are unaware of. He stated, “I can tell you that about two months ago, I was the one who helped a colleague of mine who was unable to pay ₦700,000 for his daughter’s school fees.”

Obika said that some members merely do not benefit personally from their positions and that MPs who remain mute during hearings should not be automatically accused of receiving inducements.

Therefore, members aren’t speaking if it’s for personal enrichment. You’re not speaking if you’re not receiving anything.

“I have never witnessed anything like that in my life; in fact, one member got into a fight over it.” Members of the National Assembly fight when they are rewarded rather than when they remain silent.

Therefore, when they remain silent, outsiders assume that something is amiss, he stated.

The federal politician refused to identify the coworker who was implicated in the incident.

Additionally, he insisted that the National Assembly members’ benefits and allowances are known to the public, advising Nigerians to inquire about exact numbers rather than depending solely on conjecture regarding MPs’ salaries.

“Every entitlement meant for a member is publicly available. If you haven’t found something specific, tell me, ‘Honourable, they said this is such-and-such amount’, and I’ll respond to it directly.”
