A man has recounted witnessing more than 20 cows being swept away by powerful floodwaters following heavy rainfall, in an incident that illustrates the devastating impact of this week’s floods on livestock and agricultural livelihoods across flood-affected communities.
According to the eyewitness, the cattle were carried off by the fast-moving floodwaters, leaving their owner facing catastrophic losses.
The exact location of the incident has not been confirmed, though the flooding conditions are consistent with the severe inundation recorded across multiple communities in the Greater Accra Region and beyond this week.
Footage of the area shows the full scale of the flooding, a vast expanse of brown floodwater submerging an entire neighbourhood, with utility poles and rooftops barely visible above the waterline and debris floating across the surface.
The loss of more than 20 cattle in a single flooding event represents a significant financial blow, as livestock farming constitutes a primary source of income and food security for many Ghanaian families, particularly those in peri-urban and rural communities where formal insurance coverage for agricultural assets remains limited.
This week’s floods have already claimed human lives, destroyed property, and caused the loss of an entire poultry flock at a separate farm, with the full agricultural toll of the disaster yet to be officially assessed.
