In their opening match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday, Nigeria’s Super Falcons were shockingly defeated 3-2 by debutants Malawi in their Group C match.

The reigning champions, who were heavy favorites going into the game, had trouble containing Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga of Malawi.

The spectacular upset was completed by two goals from Temwa and a third by Tabitha. Rasheedat Ajibade and replacement Uchenna Kanu helped Nigeria score, but it was insufficient to save a point.

Reflecting on the unexpected loss, Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo acknowledged that the team had a sluggish start.

Stating that they would need to come back stronger in the next game after appearing a little flat in this one, adding that the team must go back, learn its lessons, identify areas to fix, and improve going forward.

Addressing a controversial penalty decision after she was brought down inside the box, Okoronkwo said she was unsure what the referee saw and felt the incident should have been reviewed, but noted that since the decision did not go her way, she would rather not dwell on it or complain.
