Tension as secondary school students clash in Port Harcourt

Tension gripped parts of Port Harcourt Township on Wednesday following a clash between students of Government Secondary School, Borokiri, and Paboard Secondary School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The confrontation reportedly caused panic among residents and disrupted activities along the Aggrey Road axis of the city.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ibimina Polo Community, Creek Road, Alapakabia Tobin, expressed concern over the development, describing the actions of the students as disturbing and a threat to public peace.

Tobin lamented that secondary school students had resorted to violence and the use of dangerous weapons in confronting one another, calling for the urgent intervention of security agencies to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.

According to him, the cause of the clash had yet to be ascertained, adding that efforts were underway to reach the principals of the affected schools to determine what led to the confrontation.

“There are some students from Borokiri and those from Paboard fighting themselves. We really do not know what caused the matter, but I am trying to reach the principals of the schools to know what caused the incident.

“All I can say for now is that there is a security threat in town from the Aggrey Road area to the end of the axis. The students are causing a breach of peace in the community,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed reports of casualties, while security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
