Comedy heals people — Larry J

Popular comedian, Larry J, has described comedy as a form of therapy, saying comedians play an important role in helping people cope with the emotional pressures of everyday life.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, Larry J discussed the future of comedy and the increasing relevance of humour in an era dominated by social media and digital consumption.

He said the constant exposure to social media could negatively affect people’s attention span and mental well-being, adding that comedy provides a healthy way for people to experience moments of relief and happiness.

“The future of comedy is very big, knowing fully well that with the age we are in, the age of social media, if you stay stuck on social media for a long time, there is a high tendency that your attention span will be low. There is also a high tendency that you may be prone to being depressed,” he said.

Larry J added that comedy provides people with moments of joy and emotional escape.

“So, comedy is the only way where we can serve you dopamine that people are buying with a lot of money as drugs. You can sit down in a comedy show and get the same level of dopamine that people buy. So, being a comedian is like being a therapist; we heal people,” he said.

Speaking on his creative process, the comedian said consistency has helped him maintain his originality despite the pressure to follow trends in the entertainment industry.

“I maintain originality through consistency. No matter what happens, just be consistent with what you are doing,” he said.

Larry J also explained that his motivation extends beyond his personal feelings, noting that he considers the impact his content can have on people facing difficult situations.

The comedian added that knowing his content could brighten someone’s day encourages him to continue creating.

“I feel it won’t be a bad idea to put a smile on someone’s face if they can give me one or two minutes of their time. Since they are following me, I always ask myself, ‘How can I make that change?’” he said.
