Hamzat mourns Eagle Online CEO, hails journalism legacy

Lagos Deputy Gov. Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, mourned the death of media entrepreneur, Dotun Oladipo, describing it as a huge loss to Nigeria’s journalism community.
Oladipo, who died on Tuesday at the age of 56, was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Ltd, publishers of The Eagle Online.
In a condolence statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor, Tunde Alao, Hamzat expressed deep sorrow over Oladipo’s passing.
Hamzat described the late journalist as a dedicated professional whose contributions to the growth of digital journalism in Nigeria would be sorely missed.
“I received with great shock the news of the passing of Mr Dotun Oladipo. This is a huge loss not only to his immediate family but to the entire media community, particularly the online publishing industry, which he served with distinction for almost three decades,” he said.
The deputy governor noted that the deceased’s career trajectory reflected rare commitment and passion for journalism.
He traced the late media executive’s journey from his early days as Politics Editor at Punch Newspapers to his roles at the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun, before founding The Eagle Online.
According to him, Oladipo built The Eagle Online into one of Nigeria’s respected digital news platforms, contributing significantly to the country’s evolving media landscape.
Hamzat acknowledged late Oladipo’s leadership within the media industry, citing his service as former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers and pioneer President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society.
“Mr Oladipo’s passion for professional development within the media space, and his efforts to foster collaboration among journalists and publishers, will remain a lasting part of his legacy,” Hamzat added.
He commiserated with the Oladipo family, management and staff of Premium Eagle Media Ltd., and The Eagle Online, as well as the wider journalism community.
Hamzat prayed that God would grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss and grant the soul of the departed eternal rest.
