Lagos Assembly receives 2026 budget reordering request

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday received a request from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reorder the 2026 Budget of Shared Prosperity.

This was contained in a letter read to lawmakers by the Clerk, Adenike Oshinowo, outlining priorities behind the proposed adjustments.

Leading debate on the request, Olumoh Sa’ad, Chairman of the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, said the budget had achieved about 69 percent performance.

Sa’ad said the reordering was necessary to ensure available resources were channelled towards priority areas and projects requiring urgent attention.

He also suggested that the exercise could provide an opportunity for Sanwo-Olu to reconsider the proposed N200 billion bond recently presented before the House.

Contributing, Moshood Aro described the reordering as “part of the dividends of democracy”, expressing hope it would address residents’ needs.

Gbolahan Yishawu commended the budget’s performance and advocated reallocating funds to projects that were progressing and nearing completion.

Yishawu stressed that projects should receive adequate funding based on their scope and level of execution to facilitate timely completion.

He noted that some capital projects had recorded significant progress, while others remained ongoing and required sustained funding.

Kehinde Joseph urged the government to devote greater attention to environmental challenges, particularly drainage and flood-control projects.

Joseph said adequate funding was needed for interventions addressing flooding and improving residents’ quality of life.

He urged the government to prioritise projects capable of providing lasting solutions to environmental challenges across the state.

Following the debate, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa referred the proposed budget reordering to the Committee on Economic Planning and Budget.

Obasa directed the committee to critically examine the proposed adjustments and submit its findings to the House within two weeks.

The Speaker said priority must be given to projects capable of delivering tangible benefits to Lagos residents.

The House subsequently adjourned plenary until August 31, 2026 at noon.

The committee’s report is expected to guide further legislative consideration of the governor’s request before the Assembly takes a final position.

The lawmakers reiterated the need for effective allocation of public funds to ensure completion of ongoing projects across Lagos.

They stressed that adequately funding priority projects would help maximise the impact of the state’s budget on residents.
