A nearly completed house built along the roadside in Elubo, Western Region, has been pulled down during a major road expansion exercise, in scenes captured on video that have since circulated online.
Footage from the demolition shows an excavator tearing into the multi-storey building, which still had scaffolding standing around its unfinished facade, as a crowd of residents gathered nearby to watch the structure come down.
The house, described as nearly complete, appeared to have been built encroaching on land earmarked for the road expansion project in the border town.
Elubo, located in the Jomoro District near Ghana’s border with Ivory Coast, sits along a key transport corridor connecting Ghana to its western neighbour, making road infrastructure in the area a frequent focus of government expansion projects.
Demolitions of encroaching structures along road reserves have become an increasingly common feature of Ghana’s infrastructure drive in recent years, often sparking mixed reactions from affected property owners and residents who argue such projects come at a heavy personal cost, even when the development is intended to serve the wider public.
