Nigerian Woman Becomes First Indigenous Female Neurosurgeon to Lead US Children’s Hospital

The Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has stated that the appointment of Dr. Salamat Aliu-Ibrahim, Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, as Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States demonstrates that religious identity, gender, and cultural background pose no obstacle to professional excellence.

Marking the historic appointment on Thursday, the commission head characterised the achievement as a compelling counter to prevailing stereotypes and a source of encouragement for numerous young Nigerians, particularly girls pursuing careers in medicine and other challenging professions.

She noted that Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim’s advancement to one of the most senior leadership positions within a US paediatric hospital illustrates that competence, commitment, and professionalism supersede considerations of religion, culture, or gender.

According to her, this appointment represents another significant achievement for Nigerians residing abroad and reflects the substantial contributions Nigerian professionals continue making internationally.

She emphasised that the accomplishment serves as a reminder that Muslim women cover their hair, not their brains, describing Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim as a source of inspiration for countless young women throughout Nigeria and beyond.

While celebrating this accomplishment, the commission head expressed concern regarding the continued emigration of highly trained Nigerian healthcare professionals seeking improved opportunities abroad.

She acknowledged that although diaspora-based Nigerians continue distinguishing themselves internationally and contributing substantially to healthcare and other sectors, the Federal Government is implementing measures to enhance welfare provisions, compensation structures, and working conditions for medical professionals within Nigeria.

According to her, establishing more favourable conditions for healthcare workers domestically would help mitigate the nation’s ongoing professional emigration while strengthening the overall healthcare system.
