UN alarmed by increasing death toll in Middle East

The United Nations wants an immediate end to fighting in the Middle East, citing increasing violence and civilian casualties across the Middle East.

The global body pointed to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, operations in southern Lebanon and the West Bank, as well as the United States and Iran’s military actions.

The Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Israeli hostilities and demolitions in Lebanon have caused at least 4,329 deaths and 12,233 injuries since March 2.

OCHA similarly reported 349 fatalities and 229 injuries since the announcement of the latest ceasefire, a fragile and heavily contested framework formula.

Numerous kids have been impacted across the region in the past five months. According to the UN Children’s Fund, over 4,000 children have been killed or injured.

In Gaza, UNRWA reported Israel has killed 1,180 Palestinians and wounded 3,810 others between the October 2025 ceasefire and the third week of July 2026.

This week also saw continued airstrikes and gunfire, restricted aid entry, and further expansion of the “yellow line,” Israel’s line of control spanning multiple areas.

The UN relief agency indicates Israeli restrictions on goods entering Gaza are posing challenges, with over half of UNRWA’s fleet unable to operate, affecting 62 water wells.

In the occupied West Bank, the latest OCHA casualty report noted that attacks by Israel have killed 1,122 Palestinians, at least 246 of them children.

The figure was documented between the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 and 24 July 2026, with 76 slain since the beginning of this year.

UNICEF’s acting director (Middle East and North Africa), Abdul Fofana, said children are dying in places where they should be safest as the U.S. and Iran continue to trade strikes.

Fofana mentioned the case of a two-year-old child reportedly killed alongside the parents in Qeshm Island, urging all parties to comply with obligations under international humanitarian law.

“The region and the world cannot afford more war. The fighting must stop,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, calling for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab.

The UN demands a ceasefire in the Gulf, warning that the conflict is driving global instability, disrupting trade, straining supply chains, increasing food and energy prices, and the risk of hunger and poverty.
