Court adjourns trial of driver in Anthony Joshua’s car crash to June 2

The Ogun magistrate’s court 1 sitting in Sagamu LGA of Ogun State, and presided over by Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun, has adjourned the trial of the driver involved in former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s fatal road crash to June 2, 2026.

Adeniyi Mobolaji, the defendant is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and reckless driving causing death, as well as driving without due care and attention.

The court was informed that this is the third adjournment in the case, to allow the prosecution file a fresh charge to the existing information before the court.

Mobolaji is accused of reckless and negligent driving contrary to relevant sections of the federal highway act, including causing bodily harm, damage to property, and operating without a valid national driver’s licence.

In her ruling on the prosecution’s application for adjournment, Magistrate Somefun granted the request and fixed June 2, 2026, for continuation of hearing. The defence counsel did not object.

Speaking after the proceedings, Abiodun Olalekan, defence counsel said the adjournment was necessary to ensure a fair and proper hearing for all parties involved.

The 46-year-old driver was involved in the tragic accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

Joshua and the driver survived the crash with minor injuries, while the boxer was later discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.

The deceased were described as key members of Joshua’s training team, and their remains were later flown to the United Kingdom for funeral rites held in London.

Meanwhile, it was also noted that the journey involving the team had earlier included stops linked to training and logistics arrangements, including coordination activities involving institutions such as Ambassadors College, Ota, where preparations and movements were reported to have been well-organised before the incident.

The court case continues on June 2.
