Ekiti 2026: Police warn against unlawful acts, destruction of campaign materials

The Ekiti State Police Command has warned politicians and party loyalists against perpetrating unlawful acts capable of undermining the peaceful atmosphere in the state as campaign activities for the June 20 governorship election in the state gather momentum.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, said anybody found culpable of such acts “will be severely dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

Abutu, in a statement made available in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Sunday, stated that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Michael Falade, “implores citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report to the police any person or group of persons who engage in acts that could cause unnecessary apprehension in the state.”

He stated that the police “observe with dismay the attitude of some persons suspected to be political party loyalists who go about destroying and defacing the posters and billboards of political parties in the state.

“The Police Command wishes to state emphatically that the destruction of banners and billboards of political parties is against the Electoral Act and also a crime against the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is morally unjustifiable as well.”

The police spokesperson said that anyone found culpable of doing such would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He stated, “Politicians are therefore, by this release, advised to play the game according to the rules and advise their supporters to do the same to avoid dire consequences.

“The command implores parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against becoming tools in the hands of some mischievous politicians who are hell-bent on jeopardising the goal of peaceful, free and credible elections,” Abutu stated.
