FG begins payment of doctors’ salary arrears

The federal government has commenced the payment of long-awaited salary arrears owed to members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors following the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

The Witness gathered that the arrears, which cover between one and six months for affected doctors, are already being disbursed, with several beneficiaries confirming receipt.

In a notice to members, the association’s publicity and social secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Ibrahim, said the development marks a significant step in addressing outstanding welfare concerns among resident doctors.

“The leadership of NARD is pleased to inform all members that payment of the outstanding 25/35 CONMESS review arrears has commenced,” the statement read.

He assured members yet to receive payments that the process is ongoing and urged patience as disbursements continue.

Ibrahim, however, noted that the August component of the arrears is facing minor administrative challenges, which could delay payments by up to two weeks.

“Payments for August are currently facing a few challenges that are being addressed… the August arrears may be delayed by about a week or two,” he added.

The CONMESS review, which governs salary adjustments for medical and dental officers in Nigeria’s public sector, has historically been a source of friction between doctors and the government, with delays often triggering industrial actions.

Members of Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors have repeatedly raised concerns over unpaid entitlements, poor working conditions, and the growing wave of medical migration driven by better opportunities abroad.

Industry data indicates that Nigeria has lost thousands of doctors in recent years, worsening the country’s doctor-to-patient ratio and placing additional strain on the healthcare system.

Observers say the commencement of payments could help ease tensions and reduce the likelihood of disruptions in public hospitals.
