Governor okays weekly day off, N10,000 allowance for workers

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has approved a set of palliative measures for public servants in the state to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices and increased cost of living.
The initiative, which takes effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, includes a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants in the state.
The State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, announced the development in a statement.
He disclosed that eligible workers would enjoy one day off per week in addition to the special transport allowance.
According to him, “the initiative is aimed at alleviating the commuting challenges faced by workers, while also boosting morale and enhancing productivity across the public service.”
Onasanya, however, clarified that some categories of workers would be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the essential nature of their duties.
“These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff at all levels of education, security personnel, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, as well as other critical duty officers whose presence is indispensable,” he said.
He said despite their exemption from the day-off policy, affected workers would still benefit from the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance.
The Head of Service further explained that Accounting Officers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) would determine the specific day off for eligible staff in a manner that would not disrupt government operations.
Describing the intervention as “timely and compassionate,” Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for demonstrating commitment to workers’ welfare in the face of economic challenges.
He urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture by showing greater dedication, discipline, and improved service delivery.
The measure, he noted, underscores the state government’s resolve to support its workforce while sustaining efficiency in public service despite prevailing economic pressures.
