INEC intensifies voter education ahead of Ekiti 2026 gov election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has stepped up preparations for the June 20, 2026, Ekiti State governorship election, convening a high-level implementation meeting focused on voter education, publicity, and inclusive participation across the state.

In a post obtained from INEC’s X handle on Monday, speaking at the meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, described the engagement as “timely and strategic,” stressing that voter education remains the foundation of a credible electoral process.

“Voter education remains the backbone of any credible electoral process. “We must ensure voters are well-informed, misinformation is addressed, and public trust in the electoral system is strengthened,” he said.

He outlined key priorities for INEC, including expanding voter awareness campaigns, tackling fake news, promoting peaceful participation, and strengthening confidence in the electoral process.

He also called for intensified outreach to rural communities, first-time voters, and hard-to-reach areas across all local government councils.

“Democracy can only be truly representative when no group is left behind,” Dr. Omoseyindemi stated, urging stakeholders to ensure inclusion of women, youths, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups in the electoral process.

He further raised concerns about Ekiti-specific challenges such as misinformation, politically motivated narratives, voter apathy, and security risks in identified flashpoints, calling for coordinated action among stakeholders.

In her goodwill message, the Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Oluwakemi Akomolede, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting INEC in promoting peace and civic awareness before, during, and after the election.

“We are committed to working closely with INEC to ensure peace before, during, and after the election,” she said.

Akomolede disclosed that the NOA has already intensified voter education campaigns across local government areas, including radio and television sensitisation programmes aimed at improving civic participation and reducing electoral misinformation.

The meeting ended with a call for stronger collaboration among electoral stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, credible, and inclusive governorship election in Ekiti State.
