Makinde impeachment plot: Name those who offered you bribes, ex-lawmaker tells Oyo speaker

Former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adeolu Adeleke, has criticised the current Speaker, Debo Ogundoyin, over claims of an alleged plot to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde, urging him to stop “peddling rumours” and disclose those behind the purported move.

Adeleke made this known in a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday, following allegations by Ogundoyin that he was offered financial inducements and a political platform by the All Progressives Congress to orchestrate the governor’s removal.

The former Speaker, who led the House during the politically turbulent Fifth Assembly between 2003 and 2007, represented Afijio State Constituency and played a key role in the legal battle that followed the 2005 impeachment of former governor Rashidi Ladoja, which eventually resulted in his reinstatement.

Drawing on his experience in managing impeachment-related crises, Adeleke demanded greater transparency from the current Speaker, insisting that the matter should not be handled with ambiguity.

He said, “Ogundoyin must clarify his comments involving the Olubadan, Oba Ladoja and the wife of the former Governor of the state, Florence Ajimobi.

“The Speaker must identify the persons who attempted to compromise him with cash. The Speaker must disclose who he met with in Lagos regarding the supposed impeachment.

“The discrepancy between the Speaker’s words at yesterday’s (Monday’s) stakeholders’ meeting and today’s (Tuesday’s) press release is suspicious. Was he coerced into levelling allegations against Kabiyesi Ladoja? Or is this a calculated attempt to gain political leverage for his own governorship ambitions?”

Adeleke stressed that the integrity of the Speaker’s office was at stake and urged Ogundoyin to provide clarity on the allegations.

He warned that failure to do so could damage public trust in the legislature and attract negative historical judgment.
