Javier Mascherano has announced a surprise resignation as head coach of Inter Miami CF, just four months after leading the club to its first MLS Cup title.

The club confirmed the development in a statement, saying the Argentine stepped down due to “personal reasons,” marking an unexpected end to a successful spell in charge.

Mascherano, in his own words, expressed gratitude to the club and its players for the journey they shared.

“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” he said.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organisation for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.”

His departure brings a sudden halt to a tenure that delivered historic success, including the club’s first MLS Cup triumph in 2025 and deep runs in continental competitions.

Inter Miami CF acknowledged his contribution and confirmed changes in the technical structure. Club owner Jorge Mas paid tribute to the departing coach.

“Javier will forever be part of this club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family,” Mas said. “We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future.”

Following his exit, Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach, stepping up from his role as sporting director, while Alberto Marrero will assume additional responsibilities within the club’s sporting hierarchy.

Mascherano, a former Argentina international and ex-teammate of Lionel Messi at both club and national level, had been in charge for around 18 months after replacing Gerardo Martino in 2024. Under his leadership, Inter Miami reached multiple finals and secured their first MLS Cup, reshaping the club’s competitive standing.
