NBA condemns extrajudicial killing of suspect in Delta

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the killing of a suspect by a police officer in Delta State, describing it as a clear violation of the rule of law.

A video that went viral on social media on Tuesday showed the incident, in which a suspect, identified as Oghenemine Ogidi, who was seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back, was shot by a police officer.

The video has sparked widespread public outrage and calls for justice.

In a statement, the Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer involved, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usman Nuhu, has been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.

Reacting to the incident, NBA President Afam Osigwe said no law enforcement officer has the right to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Osigwe emphasised that the act violated the constitutional presumption of innocence and undermined public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

“This incident represents an arbitrary and unacceptable use of power by a law enforcement agent,” the statement read.

Osigwe noted that the event has once again highlighted long-standing concerns about the violation of the rights of suspects and citizens by some security personnel.

He warned that if such actions are allowed to continue unchecked, they could erode fundamental rights and foster a culture of impunity.

The NBA President called for a thorough, transparent, and speedy investigation, stressing that accountability must extend to all officers who may have been involved in or present during the incident.

“The investigation and prosecution process must cover any other personnel who may have aided, abetted, or failed to prevent the extrajudicial killing,” he added.

Osigwe directed the NBA Human Rights Committee and Civil Liberties Committee, along with its branches in Warri, Effurun, and Udu, to closely monitor the case and ensure that justice is served.

He also reiterated the NBA’s call for comprehensive police reforms, particularly in the areas of accountability and the use of force.

The association expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and pledged to continue advocating for justice in the matter.
