Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria Dies Before Assuming Duty

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the passing of Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died shortly after his appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria.
According to a statement issued on April 22, 2026, the diplomat passed away in the early hours of April 19 in Ankara, Türkiye, following a prolonged illness.
Before his death, Ambassador Lele served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry.
His nomination as envoy to Algeria by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had been confirmed by the Senate, positioning him for a new diplomatic assignment he would not live to assume.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, the late diplomat was an Economics graduate of Bayero University Kano and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.
He had an extensive diplomatic career, serving in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Germany; Lomé, Togo; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he was known for his professionalism, discipline, and strong commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy interests.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, described him as a dedicated and humble officer whose contributions will be deeply missed.
Ambassador Lele was buried on April 22, 2026, in Kano State in accordance with Islamic rites.
The ministry extended its condolences to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
