Senate Power Shift Deepens as Nwoye Takes Over Minority Whip Role

Senator Tony Nwoye has been named the new Minority Whip of the Senate, as a string of defections continues to alter the political balance within the upper chamber.
Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, emerged through a unanimous decision of the minority caucus, stepping into the role vacated by Osita Ngwu, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement of Ngwu’s defection was made on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following a formal letter from the lawmaker.
In it, Ngwu explained that his decision was driven by his alignment with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while also describing the APC as Nigeria’s most stable political platform.
Before his latest elevation, Nwoye had undergone his own political transition having been elected into the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party (LP), before moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2025.
The wave of defections did not end there. Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro of Gombe South also dumped the PDP for the APC, citing unresolved internal crises within the opposition party.
In a similar move, Senator Aliyu Wadada confirmed his switch from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the APC. Wadada, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, noted that although he had earlier aligned with the ruling party, his defection process has now been fully formalised.
He has also been endorsed as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 polls.
Reacting, former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, praised the lawmakers for defecting in line with constitutional provisions, describing the trend as a reflection of growing confidence in the APC and the leadership of President Tinubu.
With these developments, the APC has further strengthened its numerical advantage in the Senate, tightening its grip on the National Assembly amid ongoing political realignments.
