NMDPRA assures airliners of 74-day aviation fuel sufficiency

By Obas Esiedesa, Abuja
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has assured Nigerians of strong aviation fuel availability across the country, disclosing that current stock levels can sustain demand for a total of 74 days.
In a statement issued on Friday by Director, Public Affairs Department, George Ene-Ita, the Authority said inland reserves account for 12 days of sufficiency, while refinery stocks provide an additional 62 days, bringing total national coverage to over two months.
The clarification comes amid concerns over alleged supply shortages and rising prices of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1. The regulator, however, dismissed fears of scarcity, stressing that supply remains stable and adequate to meet domestic demand.
According to the NMDPRA, the current stock position reflects a robust supply framework supported by local refining and distribution systems. It added that it would continue to monitor supply levels closely to prevent any disruption.
The Authority reiterated that aviation fuel pricing is fully deregulated and subject to market forces, noting that the ex-gantry price at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical Company stood at N1,879 per litre as of April 16, slightly below the international benchmark of N1,900 per litre in Lagos.
It further stated that nationwide retail prices ranged between N1,960 and N2,800 per litre as of April 17, dismissing reports of prices rising to N3,300 per litre as inaccurate.
The NMDPRA assured stakeholders of its continued commitment to maintaining energy security and preventing profiteering in the downstream petroleum sector.
