Two weeks after coronation, Alli declares governorship ambition for 2027

By Laolu Elijah, IBADAN
Two weeks after his coronation in absentia as a king by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli (Oyo South), has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election ion the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Alli made the declaration on Friday at a well-attended gathering held at the Police Field in Ibadan North Local Government Area, where thousands of party leaders, chieftains and supporters converged to witness the announcement.
Alli had reacted after the coronation that he was the target, arguing that the coronation should have been shifted since all the three beneficiaries gave reasons why they couldn’t attend the ceremony.
But, the governor who was represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal crowned the three kings in absentia, explaining that the Ibadan traditional system does not give any room for a vacuum.
The lawmaker, who also holds the traditional title of Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland, said his decision followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders, traditional rulers and political leaders across the state.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Alli explained that his ambition was driven by a strong desire to accelerate development and reposition the state for greater progress.
“After my consultations with traditional rulers and political stakeholders across the state, I am here today to formally declare my ambition to contest for the office of Governor of Oyo State,” he said.
He highlighted his track record in public service as a foundation for his aspiration, noting that he had previously served as Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government Area and later as Secretary to the Oyo State Government under former governor Rashidi Ladoja.
According to him, his experience in those roles enabled him to contribute significantly to policy implementation and governance in the state.
“As Secretary to the State Government, I ensured effective coordination of government policies and programmes. As Senator representing Oyo South, I have continued to raise my voice in defence of the interests of our people,” he added.
Alli assured party members and supporters that his administration, if elected in 2027, would focus on inclusive governance, infrastructure development and improved welfare for residents across the state.
The declaration marks one of the early political signals ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State, as political activities gradually begin to gather momentum across party lines.
