‘No Retreat’ – Military Urged To Sustain Pressure On Bandits

A civil society coalition, the Northern Peace and Security Accountability Network (NPSAN), has commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, for his directive to troops to intensify operations against bandits across the North-West.
.....
Speaking at a press conference in Kano, the group’s Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Mahmood Sani, said the CDS’s instruction to troops to pursue criminal elements relentlessly reflects the urgency required to tackle insecurity in the region.
He noted that communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and parts of Kaduna have suffered years of attacks, kidnappings and displacement.
“The Chief of Defence Staff has shown that leadership is not exercised from afar,” Sani said.
The coalition praised ongoing military operations under Operation Fansan Yamma, describing it as a critical framework in Nigeria’s counter-banditry efforts.
According to the group, improved coordination among security agencies and increased pressure on criminal hideouts have begun to yield results in some areas.
NPSAN also commended the CDS for emphasising discipline, professionalism and improved welfare for troops, noting that these factors are essential for maintaining morale during prolonged operations.
“The fight against banditry is not a short-term assignment. It requires sustained commitment

,” Sani added.
The group urged residents of the North-West to support security agencies by providing credible intelligence and avoiding collaboration with criminal groups.
It stressed that local participation remains key to dismantling bandit networks and restoring stability.
While backing the military’s approach, the coalition called on security agencies to maintain professionalism and ensure civilian protection during operations.
“The success of this mission depends not only on firepower but also on trust,” the group said.
NPSAN expressed optimism that sustained military pressure, stronger inter-agency collaboration and active citizen engagement could gradually restore stability in the North-West.
The group reaffirmed its support for Oluyede’s leadership, describing it as decisive and necessary in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
