Police train Lagos detectives to tackle cryptocurrency crimes

The Police Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, Lagos, has trained its detectives on tackling cryptocurrency-related crimes.
The training was held on Friday at the Sunday Adewusi House in Ikoyi.
It was organised in collaboration with the United States Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation and supported by the United States Consulate in Lagos.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the unit’s spokesperson, Ovie Ewhubare, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit, Eloho Okpoziakpo.
Okpoziakpo said the initiative was designed to address emerging financial crimes linked to digital currencies.
He noted that the programme aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, to build an intelligence-led, proactive, and technology-driven police force.
He noted that the training focused on cryptocurrency tracing, digital asset analysis and investigative strategies for cyber-enabled financial crimes.
“The rise of digital currencies has introduced new dimensions to financial crimes.
“It is imperative for our officers to stay ahead of these evolving trends to ensure effective investigation and prosecution,” he said.
Okpoziakpo added that officers were exposed to the structure, usage and regulatory frameworks of cryptocurrencies.
He said the programme would enhance the effective investigation and prosecution of crypto-related offences.
The Police Special Fraud Unit is responsible for investigating complex financial crimes, including cyber-related offences.
