Speculation of impeachment of Governor Makinde splits Oyo assembly members

Tension is rising in Oyo State as speculation about an impeachment plot has escalated into a full political crisis within the State House of Assembly, drawing attention from the opposition All Progressives Congress.

Vanguard reported that what began as rumours has developed into a serious issue, with lawmakers reportedly holding a కీల meeting at the residence of Governor Seyi Makinde amid concerns about a possible breakdown in relations between the executive and legislative arms of government.

Following the meeting, members of the Assembly have started declaring their positions publicly. While some, including the Deputy Speaker, have denied any involvement in an impeachment move, others have remained silent, fuelling speculation of internal divisions.

Chief Whip Gbenga Oyekola has been one of the most vocal figures, firmly rejecting claims of any plot. He stated that he was neither aware of nor invited to any such plan, distancing himself from actions that could destabilise the state.

Oyekola also revealed details from the governor’s meeting, claiming that the Speaker had been approached by influential political and traditional figures regarding his future ambitions. According to him, these overtures allegedly included financial inducements, which the Speaker reportedly rejected.

Reaffirming his position, Oyekola pledged loyalty to Governor Makinde, emphasising his commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state. His stance reflects a broader trend, with several lawmakers openly aligning themselves with the governor.

Despite these declarations, uncertainty remains over the position of Adebo Ogundoyin, as questions persist about whether the expressions of loyalty are enough to ease tensions or simply conceal deeper divisions within the Assembly.

Observers suggest that the silence of some lawmakers may be significant, pointing to fractures that have yet to fully emerge.

The situation has also revived earlier warnings from former governor Ayodele Fayose, whose comments about potential instability are now being revisited as events unfold. For the APC, the developments present both risks and opportunities, as the party continues to monitor the crisis closely.
