Support Group defends Musa, calls for national backing amid criticism

A support group, the Gen. CG Musa Support Initiative, has called for sustained national backing for the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, cautioning that persistent criticism could affect ongoing efforts to stabilise the country’s security architecture.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani, on Friday, the group said General Musa’s tenure has been marked by what it described as a strong commitment to addressing Nigeria’s long-standing security challenges.

Danfulani noted that Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff before his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, returned to public service with a focus on restoring peace and national stability.

According to him, the security situation confronting the country predates the current administration and requires time, strategic planning and sustained effort to address.

“It is important to recognise the complexity of the security challenges General Musa inherited. The threats have evolved over more than a decade and cannot be resolved immediately,” he said.

The group acknowledged that no leader is without challenges but cautioned against focusing solely on setbacks while overlooking progress made by the military and other security agencies.

It also expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of negative narratives, warning that such commentary could affect the morale of security personnel.

“Our personnel are making sacrifices daily. They deserve encouragement and national solidarity,” the statement added.

Danfulani further stressed that security issues should not be overly politicised, urging stakeholders across political divides, including the opposition, media and civil society, to support ongoing reforms in the defence sector.

He called for broader national cooperation to strengthen unity in addressing insecurity, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility in achieving lasting peace.

“The nation’s security is a shared responsibility. Constructive engagement is essential at this critical time,” he said.
