Two injured as police foil another kidnapping attempt in Ibadan

By Adeola Badru
Two persons have sustained gunshot injuries following a foiled kidnapping attempt at the Old Kara area of Bodija, in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred just days after a similar attack was reported at Onigambari village along the Ijebu-Ode axis in the Oluyole Local Government Area.
During the earlier incident, a victim identified as Dasola was killed.
Confirming the latest development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, stated that the incident took place on April 21, 2026, at about 7:50 p.m.
He explained that the swift intervention of security operatives, in collaboration with local hunters, thwarted what authorities believe was a coordinated abduction attempt.
According to him, the police received a distress call from a concerned resident reporting that about four armed hoodlums had invaded a Point of Sale (POS) shop in the area and opened fire.
“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives immediately mobilised to the scene. The prompt intervention of our men, in collaboration with local hunters, foiled the attack and disrupted the criminals’ operation,” Olayinka said.
During the exchange of fire, two individuals sustained gunshot injuries. They were promptly rescued and taken to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment and reportedly responding.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, adding that security personnel have intensified bush-combing operations in and around the area.
Following the incident, the commissioner of police in Oyo State has ordered the deployment of additional personnel to vulnerable locations across the state to strengthen security and prevent further attacks.
The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that investigations are ongoing to track down and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements, as authorities intensify efforts to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
