2027: Obi picks Kwankwaso as running mate, says ‘Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre’

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has assured Nigerians that his administration would make the office of the Vice President an active partner in governance rather than a ceremonial position.

Mr Obi gave the assurance while accepting his affirmation as the party’s presidential candidate and formally announcing former Kano State governor, , as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement shared on his X handle, Mr Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions and promote transparency and accountability in governance if elected president.

According to him, the rule of law would be strictly observed by both public officials and citizens in line with constitutional provisions.

“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” Mr Obi stated.

He further promised to deepen democratic values by ensuring that opposition parties are respected and allowed to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance.

“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness and transparency,” he said.

Speaking on his choice of running mate, Mr Obi said the Vice President would play a significant role in policy formulation and implementation.

“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he declared.

The former Anambra State governor expressed confidence that his partnership with Kwankwaso would help drive his vision of national renewal, economic transformation and improved governance across the country.
