2027: Rivers PRP decries attempt to weaken opposition, as insecurity worsens
By Daniel Abia
Peopleâs Redemption Party, PRP, has lashed out on the All Progressives Congress, APCâs controlled federal government of dissipating energy in stiffening the opposition political parties while allegedly playing politics with the rising wave of insecurity in the country.
Rivers state chapter of the party accused the Federal Government of attempting to weaken opposition parties, insisting that opposition remains critical component in strengthening democracy through constructive criticism and accountability.
On the alarming rate of insecurity, the party described terrorist and bandit attacks on Nigerians as alarming, saying that the situation has deteriorated across several states with Plateau state being the worst hit.
Speaking on Sunday with Journalists in Port Harcourt, the governorship aspirant of PRP, Hon Nature Dumale said the primary responsibility of any sensitive government is to protect lives and properties of its citizens.
âMany youths involved in crime and violence lack proper orientation and directionâ, he said, adding that his organization: Youth Rescue International Development Organisation (Yrido.org), had spent the last 10 years rehabilitating and reintegrating youths rescued from the streets and bad gangs in Nigeria and beyond.
âJust on the 25th of last month, from our two 4R center of Youth Rescue International in Jos Plateau state and Port Harcourt, Rivers state, we graduated sets 26 and 27 of so many youths we took away from the streets after keeping them in our facilities. We have successfully reconciled them with their parents and reintegrated them into society, providing skill and training for them to become meaningful and useful citizensâ, he said.
Dumale criticized the APC government for what he described as insensitivity to the plight of citizens, stating that the administration has failed in governance and despite having 32 governors, âAPC still views opposition voices as threatsâ.
He however urged Rivers people and the church to rise up against intimidation, oppression and manipulation, insisting that Rivers State had suffered prolonged political crisis and infighting and must be rescued.
âThere will be no meaningful development in a state where there is anarchy and infighting that has lasted for years. No budget has been passed in this state and it is against the procurement law to carry out any project without budgetâ.
Dumale urged voters to elect leaders with compassion, empathy and verifiable records of service to humanity before politics.
The governorship aspirant said this is intentional because despite huge public funds spending on electricity and the refineries, nothing is working. âIt is possible that government intentionally abandoned this project, so that our youths will not be useful and meaningfully engaged so that they could be used as thugs to win elections.
âIn PRP government, we will ensure that no youth remains on the streets. We will create skill acquisition programmes for them. Politics ends after inauguration; governance begins immediately,â he said.
He alleged that rising insecurity, youth unemployment and political intimidation were signs of poor governance, noting that the ruling government was uncomfortable with opposition voices because of its inability to address critical national issues.
âThis government does not want any opposition. Opposition parties are meant to check and constructively criticize the government for a better society. People are dying daily because of hunger, drug addiction and gangsterism. Billions have been spent on power, yet, many communities have no electricity. Billions have also been pumped into refineries but they are not working,â he added.
The governorship aspirant of the PRP called on members of the party nationwide to remain steadfast and support the leadership of the partyâs National Chairman, Dr Akeem Baba Ahmed.
