Borno Shuts School, Relocates Students After Boko Haram Abduction of 42 Pupils

The Borno State Government has temporarily shut down and moved Government Day Secondary School in Mussa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, following the kidnapping of 42 students by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

The decision was announced by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, during an official visit to the affected community on Monday.

According to a statement from Governor Babagana Zulum’s spokesperson, Dauda Illiya, the relocation is being carried out under the Safe Schools Initiative, aimed at protecting students while ensuring that their education continues without interruption.

The affected students will resume classes at Government Secondary School, Uba.

During the visit, the Commissioner held meetings with community leaders, parents of the abducted students, and military officials, including the Commanding Officer of the 115 Battalion in Askira, Lt. Col. Ishola Olufisola.

He reassured residents that the state government was stepping up efforts to secure the safe return of the kidnapped students and reaffirmed its commitment to student safety across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the affected parents, Ishaku Jidaye praised Governor Zulum for his prompt response to the crisis and called for more vigorous rescue operations.

The delegation also visited the communities of Dille and Lassa to evaluate security conditions in public schools there, and directed that Safe School Initiative measures be fully enforced in all affected institutions.

The students were taken on May 16 after suspected insurgents launched an attack on Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba LGA.
