Donald Trump makes major announcement on Iran war after weeks of threats
Donald Trump has said that an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war “has been largely negotiated.” The deal would see Iran open the Strait of Hormuz according to Trump, although no other details have been given.
The negotiation is the largest activity between the two countries since the United States refused to attend peace talks in Islamabad in April. Posting on Truth Social, the US president claimed to have come off of a call with Middle Eastern leaders discussing “the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all things related to a Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.” He said: “An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalisation between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed.
“Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well.
“Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly.
“In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Earlier today, both Iran and the US emphasised their key positions and have warned of the risks of resuming attacks.
Iran state TV quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei as describing the draft as a “framework agreement” and adding: “We want this to include the main issues required for ending the imposed war and other issues of essential importance to us.
“Then, over a reasonable time span, between 30 and 60 days, details are discussed and ultimately a final agreement is reached.”
Earlier today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that negotiations were ongoing and could take days to finalise.
He said: “There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, in a couple of days, we may have something to say.”
Rubio repeated the US stance that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon and must turn over its highly enriched uranium, and the Strait of Hormuz must be open.
Meanwhile, Iran has rebuilt military assets after weeks of war and then a fragile ceasefire, parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said after the meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir, state TV reported.
