Foreign Driving Licence Controversy Sparks Fresh Debate on Nigerian Roads

The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, G.K. Hamzat, has sparked debate after appearing in a video where he declared that foreign driving licences are not valid on Nigerian roads and warned that the rule would be strictly enforced.

His statement drew pushback from Nigerians living abroad, particularly those holding licences from countries like the United Kingdom and various European nations, who pointed out a glaring double standard their host countries typically recognise.

Nigerian licences as valid for up to a year, while Nigeria’s own licence acquisition process is notoriously slow and riddled with issues around document forgery.

However, existing regulations tell a more nuanced story. Under 2012 rules that align with the Geneva Convention, visitors to Nigeria are permitted to drive using a valid foreign licence accompanied by an International Driving Permit for a period of up to 90 days.

Those who remain in the country beyond that window are required to either obtain a local licence or have their foreign one formally exchanged.

In light of the commander’s remarks and the possibility of roadside enforcement, driving and legal experts are advising Nigerians in the diaspora who visit home to always travel with an International Driving Permit as a safeguard against potential fines or harassment during police or FRSC stops.
