Obi says no reason to keep Nnamdi Kanu in detention, slams FG

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) insisting that there is no justification for keeping him in custody.

Obi made the remarks during an interactive session with Nigerians in Washington, D.C., United States, where he reiterated his long-held position that Kanu should be released.

According to the former Anambra State governor, detaining an individual for expressing opinions or criticising public figures undermines democratic principles and freedom of expression.

Obi argued that politicians and public office holders are often subjected to criticism and name-calling, noting that such actions should not constitute criminal offences.

He maintained that Kanu’s continued detention was unnecessary and urged authorities to embrace dialogue rather than prolonged incarceration.

The NDC presidential candidate also said he would prioritise engagement with agitators across the country if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria, stressing that meaningful discussions are necessary to understand and address the grievances driving various agitations.

According to him, consultation and dialogue remain effective tools for resolving conflicts and promoting national unity.

Obi added that engaging dissatisfied groups would provide government with a better understanding of their concerns and create pathways towards lasting peace and stability.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over Kanu’s imprisonment and renewed calls from some political and religious leaders for the Federal Government to review his case.
