Kano court sentences two men to d3ath for k!lling friend over football dispute

The Kano High Court has sentenced two men, Yusuf Ahmad and Auwal Abdulhamid to d3ath by hanging for k!lling their friend, Ibrahim Umar-Mahmud.

Ahmad, who lives in Rijiyar Lemo Quarters, Ungogo local government and Abdulhamid of Bachirawa Quarters of Kano, were convicted of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Delivering the judgement on Monday, May 25, 2026, Justice Musa Dahuru-Muhammad, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubts.

Dahuru-Muhammad therefore sentenced the convicts to d3ath by hanging.

E arlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, informed the court that the convicts committed the offence on June 7, 2025, at Bachirawa Quarters Kano.

He said that at about 10 a.m, the convicts caused the d3ath of Umar-Mahmud, by st@bbing him in the chest with a knife after a misunderstanding over football.

“The deceased was rushed to the Waziri Gidado Hospital where he was confirmed d3ath by a medical doctor,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecution presented five witnesses and tendered exhibits to prove their case against the defendant.

The convicts, however, denied committing the offence.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 97(1) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Law.

The defence counsel, Mr Mubarak Muhammad, presented the convicts to testify in their own defence.
