Kwankwaso has PhD, but Nigeria needs wealth creator like me — Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has asserted that Nigeria’s current economic challenges require a “wealth creator and manager” rather than just academic qualifications.

In an interview with News Central on Thursday, May 14, Obi addressed past comments made by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who had previously claimed at Chatham House that his PhD made him more qualified for the presidency.
 

Obi acknowledged Kwankwaso’s academic standing and administrative experience but argued that the country’s needs have shifted.

“Qualification is a perspective… He said he was more qualified because he has a PhD which is not bad. I don’t have a PhD,” Obi remarked.

However, he maintained that for the specific task of fixing the economy, his background is unmatched.

“For what Nigeria needs today, Nigeria needs a wealth creator, wealth manager. I have built reputable businesses from scratch locally and internationally. Nobody today in this context, including the president, can claim to have passed through my experience,” he said.

Responding to critics who have labeled him a “common trader,” Obi defended the profession, stating that making money through trade is one of the most difficult tasks to master. He emphasized that the nation’s survival depends on a shift in leadership philosophy.

“What Nigeria needs today is somebody that creates wealth, not somebody who shares wealth, somebody who can manage resources more efficiently and save for the future,” he stated.

This exchange comes as both Obi and Kwankwaso have joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
 

With the party reportedly zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region, political analysts suggest that Kwankwaso may eventually serve as Obi’s running mate, despite their previous debates over seniority and qualifications.
