NDC Primaries: Plan to zone Ebonyi Sen and Rep seats to one ward, gross injustice – Akuma
A Chieftain of Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC), Chief Nelson Akuma has lamented the plan by some people in NDC in Ebonyi State to zone both the senatorial and House of Representative seats to the same ward.
Speaking after his screening in Abuja, he said that such attempt would undermine the chances of the new party in winning elections in the forthcoming general election in the state.
According to him, Ebonyi south senatorial zone which comprise of Afikpo North, Afikpo South, Ivo, Ohaozara and Onicha local governments Areas and with a total of 63 wards and 1044 polling units cannot have senatorial and House of Representative seats zoned to one ward.
He said that such attempt if allowed to stand would destroy inclusion and sense of belonging.
According to him, competence, quality and talent abound in Ebonyi South, and there is no reason for anybody to impose selection from one ward.
Speaking further, he said those trying to zone the offices to one ward can best be described as the enemies of the party in the State.
Akuma called on the leaders of the party both at the state and national levels to quickly intervene to stop the party from descending into chaos.
His words“Ebonyi South produced the first Governor of the Eastern Region Dr. Francis Akanu Ibiam, first lady of Nigeria Lady Uche Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first minister of Education Onyiba Aja Nwachuku and more, so we are very sophisticated.
“We are not lacking in talent, quality or in competence. During the time Ebonyi South (known then as Afikpo province) was under Abia State, the province produced the first Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu who is an indigene of present-day Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
“I am appealing for fair representation in order to mitigate conflict. There is no reason whatsoever for one ward to have both the Senate and House of Representative seats zoned to it. That is a great injustice to the other wards. I am therefore, appealing to the leaders of the party both in Ebonyi State and Abuja to intervene as quick as possible to avert this looming danger.”
According to Akuma, if the right things are done with regard to the zoning of the tickets, NDC would become the party to beat in Ebonyi State.
He said that the party is growing in leaps and bounds every day in the State and as such no person or persons should try to kill the momentum.
“Everybody know what happened when Peter Obi visited Abakaliki. That is just a tip of how the people of Ebonyi State feel about NDC.
“Today, it remains the most popular and acceptable party in the State but if this people succeeds in what they want to do, it would not augur well for our party. As one of the leaders in the state I have already started to receive complains from a lot of people who love and mean well for our party that this must not happen,” Akuma concluded.
