Police dismiss viral Ikorodu arms arrest video as old footage

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a viral video showing the arrest of Fulani men allegedly found with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu.

 The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos.

 According to her, the video does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any other part of Lagos State.

Adebisi warned against the circulation of unverified information capable of causing panic and public anxiety.

She said recirculating the outdated footage as a recent incident could create unnecessary fear, apprehension and tension among residents.

“The video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu is an old clip.

“It relates to an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” she said.

Adebisi urged residents to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified information that could undermine public confidence and peace. 

She also warned social media users and content creators against spreading false, unverified and alarmist reports capable of causing public disorder.

The police spokesperson said anyone found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

She disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, had ordered sustained deployment of personnel and operational assets across strategic locations in the state.

According to her, security operatives have been stationed at black spots and key entry and exit points to strengthen public safety.

Adebisi said the proactive measures were being implemented in collaboration with other security and safety agencies.

She assured residents and visitors that adequate security arrangements remained in place to safeguard lives and property.

The spokesperson encouraged residents to continue their lawful activities without fear.

She also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious persons, movements and activities.

According to Adebisi, timely and actionable intelligence from residents remains crucial to crime prevention and improved public safety across Lagos State.
