Rivers at 59: Gov Fubara urges youth to remain hopeful

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has called on the youth of the state to remain hopeful, responsible, and actively involved in building a greater Rivers, as the state marks its 59th anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, security, and inclusive development across the oil-rich state.

Fubara’s message was conveyed in a statement issued by his chief publicity Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The governor also urged the youth of the state to channel their energy into innovation, hard work, and patriotism, stressing that they must remain hopeful even amid difficulties.

He called on all Rivers people to use the anniversary as “a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue, and collective progress”.

He added that the unity and future of the state must rise above personal and political interests.

“Despite the challenges faced over the years, the people of Rivers State have continued to demonstrate resilience, strength, and an enduring spirit of unity that has sustained the state since its creation,” the governor stated.

Fubara highlighted the strong bond of brotherhood among the state’s diverse ethnic nationalities — including the Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni, Kalabari, and others — describing it as one of Rivers State’s greatest assets and a foundation for lasting peace and progress.

He also emphasised the state’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy for decades, crediting not only its abundant oil and gas resources but also the significant contributions of its people in academia, law, business, entertainment, public service, and sports.

The governor assured residents that his administration would sustain people-centred policies aimed at protecting lives and property while ensuring equitable development reaches every Local Government Area.

He further paid tribute to the state’s elders and founding leaders for their role in preserving unity and coexistence.

Fubara specially acknowledged the contributions of women as “indispensable partners” in family, community, and societal development.
