Saraki urges young women to prioritise education, skills for economic independence

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged young women to prioritise education, vocational training and skills acquisition, describing them as essential for leadership, economic independence and meaningful participation in national development.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Press Officer on Local Matters, Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, Saraki made the call in Ilorin during a Young Women Symposium organised by Saraki Young Women in Politics and coordinated by Omotosho Peace.

The symposium, which attracted young women between the ages of 18 and 25, focused on mentorship, leadership development, empowerment and political inclusion.

Speaking at the event, the former Senate President challenged the participants to remain committed to personal growth and take deliberate steps towards preparing themselves for future leadership roles.

He said, “You are the future leaders of our communities, our state and our country. The decisions you make today about education, skills acquisition and self-development will determine the opportunities available to you tomorrow.”

He stressed that acquiring relevant skills and knowledge remained one of the most reliable ways for young people to overcome economic challenges and become productive members of society.

According to him, education and vocational training provide young women with the confidence and capacity needed to compete favourably in a rapidly changing world.

“Education, vocational training and active civic participation are among the strongest tools available to young people in building a successful future and contributing positively to national development,” he stated.

Saraki also applauded the participants for demonstrating a high level of political awareness, particularly through voter registration, noting that active involvement in the democratic process was necessary for sustainable development.

“I am happy that many of you are not just here by mouth but are already registered voters, ready to play your part in the democratic process,” he said.

The former governor of Kwara State recalled efforts made during his administration to create opportunities for young people through investments in key sectors, including education, healthcare, sports, aviation and youth empowerment programmes.

He explained that no society could achieve lasting progress without investing in its youth population, especially young women, whom he described as critical stakeholders in the development process.

Commending the organisers of the symposium, Saraki said the initiative reflected a genuine commitment to empowering young women through practical support rather than mere advocacy.

“This programme is timely and impactful because it focuses on giving young women the tools, opportunities and confidence they need to succeed and become future leaders,” he added.

As part of the programme, hundreds of participants were presented with empowerment materials and vocational tools tailored to their various trades and areas of interest following a needs assessment conducted by the organisers.

Saraki assured the beneficiaries that the intervention would not end with the symposium, saying efforts to support young women through empowerment and capacity-building initiatives would continue as part of a broader commitment to fostering self-reliance and leadership among the younger generation.

The event also featured the distribution of vocational tools and empowerment materials aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship, skills acquisition and greater participation by young women in societal development.
