Sheikh Gumi faces backlash over ransom-for-kidnappers comments + Video

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has come under heavy criticism from Nigerians following his recent controversial remarks suggesting that terrorists and bandits rely on ransom payments to finance their operations.

During an interview over the weekend, Gumi stated that armed groups in the country are facing intense pressure from ongoing military and security operations.

He claimed that these groups require constant funding to sustain their activities.

“The terrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives; the government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines,” he said

He further added: “If they leave banditry, they won’t have source of financing their war machine,” suggesting that ongoing security pressure contributes to their actions.

The remarks triggered widespread backlash across social media, with many Nigerians accusing him of justifying or sympathising with criminal groups responsible for widespread killings and kidnappings.

Reactions from users online reflected anger and disbelief at the comments.
