The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has sounded a fresh alarm over the security situation in the South-West, revealing that terrorist elements have reportedly gained a foothold in no fewer than 40 local government areas across the region.
Speaking in a recent interview, Adams warned that the true scale of the threat is far worse than most people appreciate.
He said findings from investigations conducted by his group uncovered a significant terrorist presence spread across dozens of the region’s 137 local government areas stressing that these were not isolated remnants but a substantial number of active elements.
He disclosed that his organisation initially chose to handle the situation quietly, privately alerting state governments in the hope of addressing the threat without public alarm.
However, he expressed deep frustration that governors across the region allegedly failed to engage with his group despite repeated warnings spanning the past two years.
Adams called for a united front in tackling criminal activity in the South-West, saying all factions of the Oodua Peoples Congress and other grassroots security outfits are prepared to work together toward that goal.
He also broadened the conversation beyond conventional security measures, emphasising that intelligence gathering, local knowledge, multilingual operatives, and even spiritual resources all have a role to play in confronting the crisis.
“All hands must be on deck to confront these criminals,” he declared.
