Which countries have never missed a FIFA World Cup?

Since the FIFA World Cup began in 1930, dozens of countries have qualified for football’s biggest tournament.

Some countries have dominated certain eras, while others have struggled to return after memorable appearances. However, only a handful of countries can proudly say they have never missed a single edition of the tournament.

Over the decades, changes in qualification formats, wars, political issues, and shocking eliminations have prevented even football giants from maintaining a perfect record. Yet a select few nations have consistently found a way to remain on the world stage.

However, in history, only one country has never missed a FIFA World Cup.

1. Brazil

Brazil remains the only country to have participated in every FIFA World Cup tournament since 1930.

The five-time world champions are also the most successful nation in World Cup history, having won the trophy in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Legendary names such as Pelé, Romário, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Kaká, and Neymar have all represented the Selecão on football’s biggest stage.

Brazil’s consistency is unmatched, with the South American giants qualifying for every edition despite the fierce competition in CONMEBOL qualifiers.

Countries That Nearly Achieved the Feat

Several football powerhouses came close to maintaining a perfect World Cup attendance record before eventually missing out.

Germany

Germany has appeared in almost every World Cup, but they did not participate in the 1930 tournament and were banned from the 1950 edition following World War II.

Despite those absences, Germany remains one of the most successful countries in World Cup history with four titles.

Italy

Italy also missed the inaugural 1930 World Cup and shockingly failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 and 2026 tournaments despite being four-time champions.

Their recent qualification failures were considered among the biggest shocks in football history.

Argentina

Argentina skipped the 1938, 1950, and 1954 tournaments due to political and administrative reasons.

Since then, Argentina has become one of football’s dominant nations, winning the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022.

Spain

Spain missed several early World Cups and only established themselves as regular participants in later decades. They eventually lifted their first World Cup trophy in 2010 in South Africa.
