WHO raises alarm as Ebola cases rise in DR Congo, Uganda

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has raised concerns over the worsening Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighbouring Uganda, warning that more infections are expected in the coming weeks.
Tedros disclosed this in an update posted on his X platform on Tuesday.
According to him, 101 Ebola Bundibugyo virus cases have so far been confirmed in the DRC, including 10 confirmed deaths.
However, he noted that the actual scale of the outbreak was far greater, with over 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths already recorded.
He further revealed that Uganda had reported two additional confirmed cases among healthcare workers, bringing the country’s total confirmed infections to seven, including one death.
The WHO chief said health authorities and partners were intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the deadly virus.
“We are continuing to scale up the response with our partners, and we expect more cases to be identified in the coming days and weeks,” he stated.
Tedros stressed the importance of rapid case detection and contact tracing in curbing the outbreak.
“The sooner we can trace people with infections and identify their contacts, the sooner we can provide the care they need and bring this outbreak under control,” he added.
