Adeshina doubtful for Commonwealth Games

Nigerian record holder in the women’s high jump, Temitope Adeshina, is still not certain about competing at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, despite enjoying a successful season in the NCAA, PidomNigeria Sports Extra reports.
Adeshina ended the 2026 NCAA season unbeaten, winning all available indoor and outdoor titles.
The 27-year-old capped a remarkable run in the U.S. collegiate system by winning the outdoor title last Saturday at the third attempt. The title had eluded her in two previous outings, but she left nothing to chance in Eugene, Oregon, clearing 1.97m to secure her first NCAA Outdoor title.
However, despite being in great shape and looking like a medal prospect for Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games, the Texas Tech athlete is still weighing her options.
“I am not sure if I will be competing after the NCAA season, but my sights are already on the next World Championships and the Olympics,” Adeshina told Making of Champions.
“At the next Olympics, my target is to be on the podium, and I have been working towards that.”
At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, she finished 19th overall and did not advance to the final.
Since that disappointment, she has responded by winning major collegiate titles but has not competed for Nigeria.
Following her breakthrough year in 2024, when she set Nigerian national records, Adeshina went on to claim her first NCAA title in 2025. She also represented Nigeria at the Paris Olympics, where she finished outside the medal positions.
She is only the second Nigerian woman to compete in the Olympic high jump after Doreen Amata, who represented the country at the Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 Games.
Earlier this year, she won the International Student-Athlete Excellence Award in the women’s category at Texas Tech’s 2026 Red & Black Gala.
