The Anambra State administration has pledged to track down the gunman responsible for the deaths of two police officers and two civilians, stating that every effort will be made to locate and apprehend their attackers.
According to our source, the police officers and two civilians were shot and killed on Sunday night while returning from an operation in a convoy on the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma Road in the state’s Orumba North Local Government Area.
The attack happened when Chief Ben Nwankwo, the state governor’s chief of staff, and Prof. Chukwuma Soludo were returning to Awka after attending a function on the governor’s behalf.
Despite the fact that several of the entourage’s civilians were hurt during the multi-minute gunfight, the Chief of Staff managed to escape unscathed.
Witnesses in the region claim that the attackers, who had taken up residence in a nearby bush, started fire on them as soon as they got close, causing fear in the local communities.
Nonetheless, Law Mefor, the state Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, stated in a news release on Tuesday that the state government consoled the relatives of the deceased and participated in their grief in addition to expressing horror over the incident.
Mefor stated that efforts are being made by the police and other security services to identify and prosecute all those responsible for this heinous deed.
“The Anambra State government is shocked by the attack on the convoy of the chief of staff to the governor on Sunday night, May 31, 2026, between 8 and 9 p.m. at the Orumba North–Awka South borders, while returning from an official assignment,” the statement said.
“This wasn’t just an assault on one individual. It was an assault on the government, the people of Anambra, and the peace, security, and democratic order of our state.
“Unfortunately, four people died, and they should be held accountable. The Anambra State Government shares the loss of the deceased and extends its sincere condolences to their families.
“Everyone involved in this heinous act is being sought for and prosecuted by the police and other security services.
“After more than a year of peace and security in the state, this isolated incident will not affect our determination to eradicate all forms of crime from Anambra.”
