LP unveils female deputy governorship candidate in Benue

The Labour Party has unveiled Mrs Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate for the forthcoming general elections in Benue State, describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen women’s participation in governance.
The announcement was made on Monday at the party secretariat along Otukpo Road, Makurdi, shortly after the emergence of the party’s governorship candidate, Mathias Byuan.
Byuan said Obeta was unanimously selected following consultations with stakeholders across the state.
“We have consulted widely with the party stakeholders across the state and today and they unanimously elected Mrs Julie Obeta as the first female governorship candidate who by the grace of God comes 2027 will be the first female deputy governor of Benue State,” he said.
Obeta’s nomination marks the first time a female candidate has been selected for the deputy governorship position in Benue State under the Labour Party platform.
Byuan said the choice reflects the party’s commitment to inclusion and women’s representation in leadership.
The governorship candidate also said the party intends to transform Benue State’s economy if given the mandate.
The Labour Party said Obeta’s selection aligns with its broader programme of promoting inclusivity and expanding opportunities for women in political leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obeta previously served on Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign team and was chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area between 2012 and 2015.
She was also appointed a special assistant by Governor Hyacinth Alia in 2023 but declined the appointment.
